There are a number of different ways to have your student participate in a GT content level class.
Testing
All students in the HCPSS will be tested with the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in fifth grade. Students who enter Howard County in middle school will be tested using the School and College Ability Test (SCAT).
Testing takes place during a variety of times throughout the year. There is a fall testing date in the beginning of the year. For our rising 6th and 7th graders, there will be spring testing for placement into GT classes for the following school year. For those students new to the county, summer testing is also available.
Placement Reviews
If the student has taken the School and College Ability Test (SCAT) or the Cognative Abilities Test (CogAT) and was ineligible for GT content classes, parents and teachers may initiate a placement review. A placement review requires a collection of various data, including but not limited to testing scores, classroom assignments, and teacher observations, to support a move into a GT content class. For more information about placement reviews, please check out the placement process and how to initiate a placement review on the HCPSS Middle School Gifted and Talented Curriculum webpage.
