The next book to be discussed will be Thanhha Lai's Listen, Slowly. Many students will be able to empathize with the female protagonist that is struggling to fully understand her identity and culture. This is sure to be a great book for discussion! Best of all, our very own DMS students will be one of the student leader groups at the November 5th book discussion! If you'd like to read an excerpt from the book as well as the numerous critical praise, check out Harper Collins website! |

Our first Howard County Middle School Book Club meeting was today at The Miller Library. We discussed Jordan Sonnenblick's Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pies. Using humor to deal with very serious issues, Sonnenblick brings 8th grade, Steven Alper, and the earth shattering news of his five-year old brother, Jeffrey's diagnosis of leukemia to relatable terms for young adult readers. Our in school discussion of the book became deeply personal and involvement students sharing many touching moments. The countywide book club was a lively meeting with Clarksville Middle, Glenwood Middle, and Hammond Middle leading group discussions. We had five of our very own DMS students attend tonight. As always, it was so much fun talking with students who love reading and most everyone enjoyed the book tremendously. |
